Travel to Osh

Discover Osh

Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city has a history stretching back over 3000 years and is one of the most culturally diverse and dynamic cities in the region. Its foundation was built on trade, and the Osh Bazaar is still one of the most important markets on the old Silk Route. The population represents the various indigenous people of the region, and it is a warm and friendly city that welcomes visitors with open arms.

For over 2000 years, the Osh Bazaar has taken place in the same spot, welcoming traders and merchants from both Europe and Asia. Today, it is still an important commercial hub, and the city's proximity to the Uzbekistan border makes it a vibrant and cosmopolitan destination.

It wears its history with pride, and the city is full of monuments and important landmarks. It is home to a 15th-century mosque, and is overlooked by the stunning Sulayman Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things To Do

Sulamain-Too Sacred Mountain

This spectacular mountain gives you a panoramic view of the city below. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a genuinely sacred spot with many ancient sites of worship still in use today.

Osh Bazaar

Also known as Jayma Bazaar, this thriving market has been the meeting place of traders and spice merchants for thousands of years, thanks to its location on the ancient Silk Route.

Rabat Abdullakhan Mosque

This 16th-century mosque is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in the city, and is popular with both locals and visitors.

Shopping

The most obvious place to do some serious shopping is, of course, the Osh Bazaar. You'll find everything from fresh produce, herbs and spices through to rugs, jewellery, and treasures from around the globe. It's still one of the most important trading posts on the old Silk Route, and a vibrant, busy market that's a joy to explore..

Keep a lookout for the stalls at the southwest entrance, which specialise in traditional embroidered gowns, tunics, and ak kalpak hats. This is a bazaar so haggling is part of the process. Be prepared to negotiate a fair price with the traders.

Food And Drink

The national dish is plov, which is a rice-based dish traditionally served with onions and carrots, but these days you'll find a huge variation of innovative dishes on offer, even in the most exclusive restaurants. Plov is often an accompaniment to shashlyk, a mutton or lamb kebab that has been marinated in herbs and spices. Expect it to be loaded with flavour, and with plenty of heat from the chilis that are added to almost everything here.

Look out for the legendary Osh-samsa, a flaky pastry stuffed with meat and vegetables that is much more substantial than other variations across the region.

Prices are reasonable, even in the more exclusive restaurants, and street food is good quality, filling, and incredibly cheap.

Things To Know

Visa Requirements

  • The majority of travellers will be able to enter Kyrgyzstan without applying for a visa. If a visa is required, it can be arranged online, but bear in mind that they are valid at a limited number of entry points. Frontier entry points and any location within 50km of the Chinese border require military border permits. Applications can take up to a month, so plan ahead carefully.
  • If you do require a visa to enter the country, you may also need to register within three days of arriving. Your hotel or travel company will be able to confirm this for you.

Other Facilities

  • Osh has a large central hospital with good quality facilities for minor injuries and ailments. However, if you travel further afield you may find that health facilities become few and far between.
  • ATMs are plentiful in Osh, but bear in mind that your bank may charge a fee for using them to withdraw funds. Outside the city centre there are far fewer banks and ATMs, and many of the traders at the Bazaar and in smaller shops and restaurants may not take cards, so ensure you have cash on you as well as credit cards.

Getting Around

  • Osh is a relatively small city, so it's easy to navigate your way around the major tourist spots on foot.
  • Buses are plentiful, but it's well worth checking the destination panel very carefully if you're heading for the airport, as some buses on the same route actually go to the Uzbekistan border crossing, particularly the 107 route.
  • Taxis are plentiful, but will charge more after dark, especially if you're heading for the airport when the price can jump from 200som to 400som. Agree a fare before getting in.
