Abha Flight Deals with Jazeera Airways

Explore Abha with Jazeera

This mountain city is the perfect escape from the heat of the desert, and is a favourite summer vacation spot with Saudis from across the kingdom. Its altitude gives it a mild climate with very little in the way of extreme temperatures. It's close to the Asir National Park, and is packed full of historical interest too.

The city still has many of its ancient mud houses that are a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region, and includes some exceptional and rare features such as the only surviving pedestrian bridge from the Ottoman period.

Things To Do

Abha Resort and Abha Lake Dam

Abha Resort and Abha Lake Dam

This manmade lake is popular with locals, and is surrounded by a 300,000m sq. garden. You can also pick up the cable car ride up to Green Mountain from here.

Asir National Park

Asir National Park

One of the most important national parks in Saudi Arabia, this green expanse is dotted with villages that have resisted the march of time and are the same today as they were hundreds of years ago.

Hanging Village of Habala

Hanging Village of Habala

Only for the brave, this unique village is only accessible by climbing up and down the ropes as the village is halfway down a cliff!

Shopping

Abha has some excellent (and fully air-conditioned!) malls, where you can browse some of the more familiar high-street stores and outlets, as well as plenty of independent shops selling traditional Arabian clothing, jewellery and handicrafts. Keep a look out for the Tuesday Market, which is a bustling and lively souq full of all kinds of spices, perfumes, and goods.

For traditional silverware, head to the Khamis Souq, and around June you may also catch the Abha Shopping Festival, which is a celebration of the diversity of products on offer throughout the city.

Food And Drink

Food And Drink

Most of the city's restaurants are clustered in the Downtown area, where you'll find a choice of cafés, fast food outlets, and more exclusive restaurants serving traditional Middle Eastern food. Be aware that some restaurants are male-only establishments, so for family-friendly eateries look to the Al Salam Palace Hotel, or the Tariq for excellent Pakistani Biryani and other spicy dishes.

Things To Know

Visa Requirements

  • Visitor visas are issued before travel, through the Saudi embassy or consulate in your country of origin. They are normally only issued for specific festivals and events, and are usually arranged by the organising body. For hajj pilgrims, it is a little bit of a lottery as the country operates a 1-in-1000 visa quota and can only be obtained through approved travel agencies.

Other Facilities

  • Health facilities in the city are good, although it is not free so it's important to have full medical insurance cover and funds to cover any treatment before travelling. For business travellers, health insurance is mandatory. It is advisable to avoid drinking tap water in the country, so a reusable bottle with a filter is a worthwhile investment, especially during the extreme summer heat.

Getting around

  • The most common way of getting around Abha is by taxi, private hire car, or bus. Taxis are metered and plentiful, and the vast majority are air-conditioned, too. Hire cars are available to men and women over 25. You will need a full driving licence and an international driving licence as well. These can be issued at the car rental offices, and are valid for a year.
