The ancient city of Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is one of the most beautiful cities in eastern Europe. This hidden gem is becoming a real tourist destination, thanks to its turbulent and fascinating history. It’s the meeting point between east and west and is famous for its religious tolerance and diversity. 

Sarajevo is also historically important, and where Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, triggering the First World War. Today, it’s a friendly, popular city that has a genuinely laid-back attitude and village feel, despite its ultra-modern centre. Surrounded by mountains and nestled in a winding river valley, it’s also incredibly picturesque. Packed with markets, boutiques and galleries, it’s a shopper’s paradise, while food lovers will find an eclectic mix of influences throughout the city, with some of the best restaurants in the region offering exquisite dishes from across Europe.

Baščaršija

The historic region of Sarajevo is full of cobbled streets, classical architecture, and open spaces. It’s a vibrant, busy and multi-cultural area, with almost every religion represented here too. At its heart is the Sebilj fountain, built in the 18th century and a great place to stop and grab a drink of cold water on a hot, sunny day.

The Emperor’s Mosque

The oldest mosque in the city was built in 1457 and was rebuilt in 1565 and dedicated to Suleyman the Magnificent. It’s a stunning representation of eastern European Islamic architecture, and welcomes both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The Latin Bridge

Close to the spot where Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated, this elegant bridge is a popular walking spot for visitors and locals alike.

Shopping

From charming boutiques to modern malls, there are plenty of shopping opportunities in Sarajevo. The Old Town has a plethora of carpet and rug sellers, as well as the locally produced and incredibly ornate copperware that the region is famous for. For the best in jewellery and gifts, head to the underground Souq and covered market along the west side of Gazi Husrev-begova Street.
For a more modern shopping experience, Sarajevo has plenty of malls to choose from, including the huge Sarajevo City Center Mall, with over 160 shops and stores.
The majority of shops will take card payments, although some smaller outlets may still prefer cash. There are plenty of banks and ATMs available but be aware that your bank may charge for withdrawals. Both the Convertible Mark and the Euro are widely accepted in most shops.

Food And Drink

Food is hugely important in Bosnian and Serb culture, and a meal is a time where the entire family and friends come together so expect warm welcomes in family-run restaurants, hearty meals, and plenty of variety. Meat plays a central role in Bosnian cuisine, particularly minced beef and mutton. Look out for the Bosnian version of a kebab, the Ćevapi, which is grilled meat served in a pitta or flatbread. Vegetarian options are sometimes difficult to find, but the more central restaurants cater for vegetarians and occasionally also offer vegan options too.

On-the-go food includes burek, which is a meat pie, and pita, which is filo pastry filled with meat, cheese, spinach, spiced pumpkin or potatoes. Coffee is served very sweet and very strong, while sweet treats are usually pastry-based sweetened with honey.
