It is the largest city in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, and the 3rd largest city in the kingdom after Riyadh and Jeddah. It's a commercial and financial hub, but has lots of attractions for tourists to visit.

As the commercial hub of Saudi's eastern province, Dammam is a major seaport, a key railroad terminus to Riyadh and a major petroleum and natural gas centre. Besides the oil industry, the city's economy is backed by agriculture and dairy farming. Things To Do

Al-Marjan Island

This artificial island, also known as Coral Island, is connected to Dammam by a bridge. Although small, it houses a pretty park, green areas and playgrounds for kids, and the ferry ride to the island includes meals and is a great day out.

Corniche

Dammam's beautiful corniche extends along 4km of coast, offering visitors seaside walkways, jogging paths, parks and relaxing seating areas. It is ideal for a day out with family and friends especially during the cooler months.

Dolphin Village

Situated at the entrance to Coral Island, the village is a place for family entertainment with swimming pools, rides, and lots of fun. Learn about dolphin conservation, or just treat the kids to some ice cream.

Tarout Castle

Located on a small island is the fine-looking Tarout Castle, dating back to the 16th century. Mystery still surrounds who built this castle, but it is very likely that the Portuguese built it to defend themselves against Turkish attacks.

Shopping

The best thing about shopping in Dammam is that you get such a great choice of retail options. It's a fascinating blend of modern shops and traditional souqs. You can get practically everything here from souvenirs and handmade crafts to international labels and luxury goods.

There's a cluster of malls, prominent among them being the Al Bilad Mall. It offers great shopping opportunities form local brands to the latest internationals fashions. There are several music and video game shops too. The Al Sharqia Ladies Mall, as the name suggests, is exclusively for women and specialises in clothing and jewellery.

For something more rustic drop by Share Al-Hob Traditional Market. It consists of numerous stalls selling an endless variety of products from clothing and perfumes to gold and jewellery. A good place to pick up authentic Saudi souvenirs.

Food And Drink

Residents in Dammam are a mix of different nationalities and hence has a wide choice of eating places serving both national and regional favourites. You can also find impressive international dining options. This mixture of ethnicities has made a major impact on Dammam's traditional cuisine.

For some truly authentic Lebanese food, visit Fayrouz Restaurant. Located in the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Centre, the restaurant is noted for its quality and distinctive atmosphere by the pool.

There's no better place to sample typically local cuisine than the Heritage Village. Set in a building resembling a Saudi castle, the family rooms serve traditional Saudi delicacies. There's even a museum attached. Brasa de Brasil Churrascaria offers some delightful barbecue delights - Brazilian style! You cannot beat the tender cuts of meat here.

The real taste of Lebanon is traditional Kabsa, made of chicken/lamb and rice. The Yemeni Mandi is another favourite. Hejazi cuisine is also popular so ask for dishes like Mabshoor, Mitabbak, Hareisa and Kabab Meiror. Shawarma, Kofta, and Kebab are always a treat. You'll find them at all Lebanese, Syrian, and Turkish restaurants.

Visa Requirements

  • Citizens of all countries require a visa to visit Saudi Arabia except the citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council members -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and United Arab Emirates.
  • All visitors must hold a passport valid for 6 months.
  • Visitors to Saudi Arabia must obtain a visa in advance unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries.
  • A special visa category exists for pilgrims coming to Saudi Arabia on the Hajj. Applications are encouraged to be done via licensed travel agents.

Getting around

  • Public transportation in Dammam consists of buses, taxis and dubbabs.
  • Your best bet is to rent a car.
  • Taxis are a very common and affordable way to get around the city. Fahad Al Fahd Taxi Group is one of the more popular taxi companies operating in Dammam. Normal charge is 10-20 SR for a trip within the city.
  • Buses are cheap, but don't have a proper schedule so make sure you know where you are going before you board one.
